To reinforce what has been said by others: the 2B really needs the mains adaptor power supply to perform as it should. Battery power should only be used as a last resort when connecting to the mains is impossible.
Yes, without a power supply it is only possible to a very limited extent. once you have got used to the performance, you are very quickly at 40% and above that there is no more performance in battery mode.
